The neon sign of the Route 6 Diner buzzed with a low, rhythmic hum, casting a warm orange glow over the cracked vinyl booths. Inside, the air smelled of burnt coffee and maple syrup, a comforting familiarity for seventy-one-year-old Walter. Dressed in a simple, dark blue cardigan, his messy white hair caught the fading afternoon light. Walter sat quietly, enjoying a moment of peace, his hands resting on the polished handle of his wooden cane. It was a simple piece of oak, but to him, it held a lifetime of memories.

The peace was shattered when the diner’s heavy glass door swung open. A group of local bikers, notorious for causing trouble in the county, swaggered in. Their leader, Roy, was a husky, bearded man clad in a worn leather vest that smelled of asphalt and cheap beer. Roy’s eyes scanned the room, landing instantly on Walter. To Roy, the elderly man looked like easy prey—a helpless target to humiliate for a cheap laugh.

With a mocking grin, Roy marched over to Walter’s booth. Without a word, he snatched the wooden cane from the table, holding it up like a trophy. His buddies in the background erupted into cruel laughter. As Roy turned to walk away, his bulky frame carelessly knocked over Walter's water glass. The cold liquid spilled across the table, soaking the napkin dispenser, but Walter didn't even flinch.

"Hey old man, looks like you'll have to crawl home today," Roy sneered, his voice dripping with malice as he walked away.

The diner went dead silent. The waitress held her breath, expecting the old man to plead or cry. Instead, Walter remained completely unfazed. His face was a mask of absolute calm. Slowly, he reached into his cardigan pocket, pulled out an old, rugged flip phone, and flipped it open. He dialed a number from memory and held it to his ear. When the line connected, his voice was cold, steady, and filled with an ancient authority.

"It's me," Walter said, pausing for a brief second as the voice on the other end responded. "Bring 'em."
