The Rain and the Rusty Neon

The neon sign of the roadside cafe buzzed with a low, irritating hum, casting a harsh pink glow over the rain-slicked pavement. It was past midnight, and the autumn wind carried a bitter chill. Lyle stood shivering near the entrance, his thin jacket soaked through. He hadn't eaten a proper meal in three days, and his stomach ached with a hollow, burning hunger. He just wanted a warm corner, maybe a cup of leftover coffee. But mercy was hard to find on this stretch of highway.

Suddenly, the heavy glass door swung open. Monty, the cafe's burly security guard, stepped out. His black tactical vest made him look twice his size, and his face was twisted in a permanent scowl. Without a word of warning, Monty grabbed Lyle by his collar. "Get out, kid!" he yelled, his voice echoing off the concrete as he shoved the young man away with brutal force.

Lyle stumbled backward, his worn sneakers slipping on the wet asphalt. He crashed onto the hard ground, scraping his palms. Tearful and exhausted, he turned his head away, whispering to himself, "I'm so hungry."

As he tried to push himself up, something metallic slipped from his torn pocket and clinked against the pavement. It was a tarnished silver locket, shaped like a wild rose. Before Lyle could reach for it, a heavy leather boot stepped into the frame. Justin, a rugged biker with a weathered face and a thick grey-flecked beard, had been watching from the shadows. He bent down, his calloused hands gently picking up the delicate piece of jewelry.

Justin stared at the locket, his expression shifting from curiosity to pure shock. He looked up at the weeping boy.

"That locket?"
Justin asked, his voice suddenly thick with emotion. Lyle wiped his nose, his voice barely a whisper.
"Mama kept it. It's all I have left of her."
