Previously: When a hungry young man is shoved out of a roadside diner, a rugged biker notices his fallen silver locket—and uncovers a secret that changes both of their lives forever.

A Ghost from the Past

Justin stood frozen under the buzzing neon light, his heart hammering against his ribs. With trembling fingers, he flicked open the tiny silver latch of the locket. Inside, protected by a thin layer of scratched glass, was a faded photograph of a young woman with bright blue eyes and a radiant, gap-toothed smile. It was a face Justin had not seen in nearly twenty years, but one he would never, ever forget.

He gripped the locket tight, kneeling down in the wet gravel right next to the shivering boy. "What was your mother's name, son?" Justin asked, his rugged exterior completely melting away to reveal a desperate, hopeful man.

Lyle looked up, startled by the sudden gentleness in the biker's voice.

"Her name was Sarah,"
Lyle mumbled, his lips blue from the cold.
"She passed away six months ago. She told me if I was ever in trouble, to head north and look for... for a man named Justin. But I lost everything on the road. I couldn't find him."

A tear slipped down Justin's bearded cheek, mixing with the rain. "Lyle," Justin whispered, reading the boy's name from a small engraving on the back of the metal casing. "I am Justin. I'm your uncle. I've been looking for your mother for half my life."

Before they could process the weight of the moment, Monty stepped forward, sneering. "Hey, biker! We don't want trash loitering around here. Move him along, or I'm calling the cops." Justin stood up slowly, towering over the guard. The warmth in his eyes was instantly replaced by a dangerous, protective fire. He stepped directly into Monty's space, his chest pressed against the guard's tactical vest. "This boy is my family," Justin growled, his voice low and threatening. "And you will never touch him again." Monty took a step back, suddenly realizing he had crossed the wrong man.
