Previously: When a rugged biker tries to pay for breakfast with his last possession—a silver ring—a kind waiter steps in, unaware that the ring holds the key to his own forgotten past.

The Engraving on the Ring

Connor stood frozen as the rumble of Vance’s motorcycle faded into the distance. He looked down at the table and realized Vance had left the silver ring behind. Picking it up, Connor turned the heavy metal over in his palm. As his thumb traced the intricate engraving of the soaring hawk, a sudden jolt of recognition ran down his spine. He knew this design. He had seen it before, preserved in a faded, plastic-wrapped photograph his mother had kept in her jewelry box until the day she passed away. It was a photo of a young man wearing this exact ring, holding a newborn baby.

Connor’s heart hammered against his ribs. He turned to Mr. Higgins, who was watching him with a strange, nervous expression.

"Mr. Higgins, do you know who that man was?"
Connor asked, his voice trembling. Higgins avoided his gaze, busying himself with a stack of menus.
"Just some biker, Connor. Forget about him and get back to work,"
Higgins replied defensively.

But Connor wouldn't let it go. He held up the ring.

"This ring belonged to my father. My mother told me he died in an accident when I was a baby. But this is his ring. Why did you look at him like you knew him?"

Higgins sighed, his shoulders slumping as the weight of a decades-old secret finally broke him.

"I did know him, Connor,"
Higgins confessed quietly.
"His name is Vance. He didn't die. But back then, he was reckless, always getting into trouble. Your mother wanted a stable life for you, and I... I wanted to protect my sister. When Vance went away to serve a brief prison sentence, I told him you both had moved across the country and wanted nothing to do with him. I intercepted his letters. I lied to him, and I lied to you."
Connor stared at his manager, utterly betrayed by the man he had trusted for years.
