The Diner at the End of the World

The rain was a relentless curtain, blurring the neon glow of the "24-Hour Diner" sign into a pulsating scarlet smear. Inside, the air was a thick soup of fried onions, stale coffee, and the metallic tang of gun oil. It was the kind of night where the world outside felt like a bad dream. I sat at the counter, the worn vinyl cool beneath my fingertips. My name is Lily, and I lost my sight in Fallujah. The rhythmic drumming of the rain on the grease-filmed windows and the low drone of the exhaust fan were my world. Then, the glass door burst open with a violent bang, showering the checkered linoleum with a spray of icy water. Heavy, soaked boots stomped inside, each impact vibrating through the floorboards. My ears twitched, registering the scent of CLP lubricant – a familiar, unwelcome aroma. A jagged, guttural snarl cut through the diner's ambient noise: "Empty the register, old lady, before I blow this diner straight to hell!" My jaw tightened, my mind already assessing. Calm. Breathe. I lifted my coffee mug, the ceramic warm against my hand, my movements steady despite the sudden tension. His footsteps squelched closer, too close. The cold steel of a pistol muzzle pressed hard against my temple. A bead of condensation, or was it sweat, traced a path down my skin. "Look at me when I talk to you, blind bitch, or you’re the first corpse!" His voice was a ragged whisper, thick with a dangerous mix of fear and arrogance. But I wasn't looking. I was listening. The slight tremor in his hand, the almost imperceptible click of the hammer, the faint scrape of metal against my skull. My world narrowed to the sensation, the sound, the scent. This wasn't just a robbery; it was an invasion.
