Calculated Retaliation

His index finger began its slow, deliberate descent towards the trigger. In that fraction of a second, years of training, ingrained reflexes, and a desperate will to survive converged. My left forearm snapped up, a blur of motion, my palm striking the slide with a sharp crack, deflecting the barrel upward. Simultaneously, my right heel-palm drove into the sensitive point of his radial nerve. A jolt of pure kinetic energy coursed through his arm. His fingers spasmed, the heavy steel pistol ripped from his grasp in a textbook disarm maneuver. He stumbled back, eyes wide with shock, tears welling as the nerve shock hit him. "Four-pound trigger pull, uncleaned feed ramp, and two clumsy footsteps too close," I stated, my voice a low, chilling rasp. The gun was mine now. I depressed the takedown lever, racking the slide with practiced ease, ejecting the live round, catching the brass casing mid-air. The magazine slammed onto the linoleum with a deafening clang. In seconds, the weapon was disassembled, inert pieces laid bare. I slammed the bare frame against his windpipe, pinning him against the cracked red vinyl booth. He gasped, a pathetic, whimpering sound. "P-please... I didn't know... what the hell are you?!" His question hung in the air, heavy with dawning terror. I pressed the unspent hollow-point bullet I’d retrieved against his trembling forehead, the brass cool against his feverish skin. "I lost my eyesight in Fallujah... but in the dark, you're the one who's completely blind." His chin quivered, cold sweat beading on his neck. He was utterly defeated, paralyzed by the realization that his intended victim was a far greater threat than he could have ever imagined. But as his confession tumbled out, a new, more chilling narrative began to unfold – this wasn't random. He was sent. By someone I thought was buried in the past.
