Previously: A seasoned veteran, blind and alone in a dark tavern, is confronted by a masked robber. What starts as a simple threat quickly escalates into a battle of wits and wills, revealing a hidden past.

A Test of Wills

Vance, unnerved by Noah's unnerving stillness, closed the distance with aggressive intent. His gloved index finger twitched, tightening around the trigger guard. Through the small eyeholes of his mask, his hazel eyes glared with ruthless malice, a silent promise of violence. He leaned in, his breath hot and ragged.

"You deaf as well as blind? Drop the cane now!"
he sneered, his mouth moving with agitated agitation. Yet, Noah remained impassive, his lips sealed. A subtle twitch in his left ear betrayed his awareness as he detected the faint, metallic click of the Glock's slide safety disengaging. His weathered fingers, resting on his cane, imperceptibly tightened their grip. The air crackled with unspoken threat, a silent battle of wills unfolding in the dimly lit tavern. Vance, accustomed to immediate compliance, seethed at the veteran’s defiance. He saw only a vulnerable old man, unaware of the deadly game he was playing. But Noah was no ordinary civilian. The faint click of the safety was a familiar sound, a trigger for dormant instincts honed over decades of service in some of the world's most dangerous hotspots. He analyzed the sounds, the smells, the subtle shifts in air pressure. Vance’s arrogance, his haste, his poorly maintained weapon – they were all data points in Noah’s internal calculus.

Then, Noah spoke. His voice, emerging from the shadows, was unnervingly calm, each word articulated with razor-sharp precision.

"Carbon buildup on the slide. Three paces out. You're holding an uncleaned Glock-19, son."
The words hung in the air, heavy with an unexpected authority. Vance froze, his aggressive posture faltering. Behind the mask, his fierce hazel eyes widened in paralyzed shock. His breath hitched, his throat visibly swallowing as the implications of Noah's words sank in. The masked robber, moments before so confident and menacing, was now visibly rattled. The veteran, whom he had dismissed as an easy mark, had just turned the tables with a few chillingly accurate observations. The hunter had suddenly become the hunted, his carefully constructed facade of power crumbling under the weight of Noah's quiet, almost supernatural, awareness.
