Previously: A blinded combat vet's quiet night at an art gallery turns deadly when a heist crew invades. But they picked the wrong woman to underestimate.

The Unfolding Nightmare

Lightning flared again, a blinding flash that etched Viktor’s silhouette against the tempestuous sea. He moved closer, the cold steel of his pistol pressing against the nape of Sarah’s neck. A lesser person would have flinched, would have screamed. But Sarah was no ordinary woman. Her shoulders relaxed, settling into a state of combat readiness. Her milky eyes, though unseeing, remained fixed forward, betraying nothing. Then, she spoke, her voice a whisper, sharp and unnerving in its calm. "Hollow-point nine millimeter, heavy slide recoil spring, and you're favoring your torn left meniscus."

Viktor froze. The predatory sneer on his sweat-glistening face vanished, replaced by a mask of paralyzed shock. His eyes widened in disbelief, a single bead of cold sweat tracing a path down his temple. He had expected fear, perhaps a desperate plea. He received a clinical assessment instead. Sarah, despite her blindness, had a combat veteran's senses, honed to a razor's edge. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, the subtle tension in his stance, the slight tremor in his hand. She knew his weapon, knew his weaknesses.

"What the hell are you—aargh!" Viktor’s agonized howl was cut short.

Guided by the heat signature of the pistol and the faint reverberation of his own breath, Sarah moved with explosive speed. She ducked beneath the line of fire, a phantom in the strobe-lit darkness. Her cane, a weapon in its own right, thrust upward with brutal precision, striking Viktor’s knee. The sickening crack of bone echoed through the gallery. Before he could recover, her forearm snapped up, trapping his gun arm in an inescapable wrist-lock. Her jaw was locked, her focus absolute. She twisted his wrist, the joint audibly popping, and the suppressed pistol slipped from his grasp, clattering onto the marble floor. It was hers now. She racked the slide with a fluid, practiced motion, ejecting the magazine and catching the chambered round mid-air in a seamless three-beat drill. Viktor, his leg useless, buckled. Sarah swept his legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the wet floor. She was on him in an instant, pinning him with her weight, the empty barrel of his own weapon pressed hard against his forehead.
