Previously: A masked gunman targets a blind veteran in a hospital's emergency bay, only to discover he's picked the wrong man. The confrontation escalates into a battle of wits and survival.

Escalation

The young man, Damian, was clearly unnerved. My calm assessment of his position and his trembling hand had thrown him off balance. He'd expected an easy target, a helpless old man. Instead, he found a seasoned combat veteran, blind but far from defenseless. His rage, however, only intensified. He closed the gap across the slick floor with frantic, spitting desperation, thrusting the pistol barrel directly towards my forehead.

"Don't test me, blind bastard!"

His voice cracked with a mixture of fury and fear. I could almost feel the heat radiating from his agitated state. My breath hitched into a sharp, tactical intake, a primal response honed by years of anticipating threats. My blank, cloudy eyes stared forward, unfocused to him, but my mind was a map of the room, every surface, every sound. My calloused hand, steady as stone, precisely aligned itself with the cold edge of the steel surgical tray.

He was too close now, his breath hot and ragged against my face. The smell of fear mingled with the gun oil. This wasn't a professional hit; this was a desperate gamble gone wrong. He needed the drugs, probably for himself or someone close to him. But his panic made him unpredictable, a dangerous liability in such close quarters.

He lunged, intending to force my compliance, perhaps to shove me aside and get to the safe himself. But he underestimated the core of steel beneath the weathered exterior. With lightning military reflexes, honed over countless training drills and actual combat situations, I swayed inside the muzzle line.

"Three seconds too slow."

My hand moved with blinding speed, striking his wrist with the sharp edge of the steel table. A sickening crunch echoed in the room, followed by the clatter of the pistol as it was wrenched clean from his grip, skittering across the linoleum. Damian cried out, a sharp gasp of pain and disbelief. His disarmed hand went limp, his eyes widening in paralyzed shock.
