Previously: A masked gunman targets a blind veteran in a hospital's emergency bay, only to discover he's picked the wrong man. The confrontation escalates into a battle of wits and survival.

The Veteran's Price

Damian lay face down on the cold stainless steel gurney, my forearm locked firmly across his back, pinning him. The stripped pistol lay mere inches from his cheek, a stark symbol of his failed attempt. My unseeing eyes stared blankly at the dark ceiling, my expression one of chilling detachment. The adrenaline surge had subsided, leaving a cold, calculating calm.

"Now tell your boys outside... retreat, or they carry you out."

My voice was quiet, devoid of emotion, yet laced with an inescapable finality. Damian's chin began to quiver violently. Tears welled along his lower eyelids, reflecting the harsh glare of the surgical lights against the frosted metal. He was utterly broken, the bravado gone, replaced by raw, primal terror.

He stammered, trying to form words, his breath catching in ragged sobs. "They… they won't leave me…"

"They will if they value their lives," I stated calmly. "This was never about the narcotics. This was about desperation. And you picked the wrong place to find it." I released my hold slightly, allowing him to push himself up, wincing as he cradled his broken wrist.

As he stumbled towards the doors, I called out, "Arthur. My name is Arthur."

He paused, looking back with wide, terrified eyes. He didn't need to see to know he was utterly defeated.

Later, after the police had taken a whimpering Damian away and his bewildered accomplices had scattered, I sat in the quiet trauma bay. The rain had stopped. The gun oil and nylon scent had faded, replaced once more by the clean sterility of the room. The encounter was a stark reminder that the echoes of war never truly fade, and that even in blindness, one can still see the truth of a man's heart – and his weaknesses. Some battles are fought not with sight, but with an unshakeable will.
