The Dust of Fort Meade

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete pad behind the main hangar of Fort Meade, bleaching the ground to a blinding white. For Lauren, the heat was the least of her concerns. Her wrists were bound tightly behind her back, the plastic zip-ties biting into her skin. Flanked by two towering military police officers in full tactical gear, she felt incredibly small in her simple white tank top and camo trousers. But beneath her stoic expression, a fire burned.

"Hold her still," a cold voice commanded from behind. It was Jason, a powerful civilian contractor who had slowly turned the base’s logistics division into his personal black-market playground. He wore a charcoal t-shirt and khakis, looking completely out of place among the uniforms, yet he commanded the corrupt MPs like his personal militia.

Jason ran up, his face twisted in a mask of furious triumph. He had discovered that Lauren was snooping around his private offices, copying shipping manifests that detailed millions of dollars in stolen military equipment. He didn't know who she worked for, but he wanted to make an example of her before she could speak to the brass.

"Shave her head! If discipline won't break her, humiliation will!" Jason roared, gesturing wildly.

One of the soldiers pulled a heavy pair of electric clippers from a case. The loud, aggressive buzz of the motor filled the hot air, vibrating near Lauren's ear. Tears of anger and frustration welled in her eyes, but she forced herself to look straight ahead, refusing to give Jason the satisfaction of seeing her beg.

"You have no idea who you're touching," Lauren warned, her voice low, steady, and dripping with a quiet promise of retribution.

Jason chuckled mockingly. "I know exactly what you are. A nobody." He nodded to the soldier, who pressed the cold metal blades against her scalp. A clump of light-brown hair fell to the dusty concrete. But before the clippers could take another pass, a booming voice shattered the tense atmosphere.

"Stop right now!"
