The Window of Dreams

The autumn sun cast a warm, golden glow over the bustling downtown street, but Clara felt none of its warmth. Shivering in her oversized, faded grey sweater, she pulled the worn fabric tighter around her shoulders. Her reddish-brown hair was a tangled mess, and her face was pale, carrying the heavy lines of a grief that had lasted for three long years. To the busy shoppers rushing past, she was just another invisible soul lost in the city's shadows. But Clara wasn't wandering today. She was frozen in front of the exquisite glass display of Aura Bridal, the city’s most prestigious boutique.

Behind the spotless glass stood a masterpiece. It was a white lace wedding gown, its intricate floral embroidery cascading down a delicate tulle skirt, featuring a unique, hand-stitched asymmetrical neckline. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. Tears welled in her eyes as she reached out, her trembling fingertips touching the cool glass. It was so familiar. It was like looking at a ghost from her past. "What a beautiful dress!" she whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of awe and deep, agonizing pain.

The heavy glass door of the boutique suddenly swung open. Out stepped Victoria, the elegant boutique manager, looking immaculate in a sophisticated dark blue dress. She crossed her arms, her eyes scanning Clara’s disheveled appearance with immediate, cold disgust.

"Please leave. You are making our customers uncomfortable," Victoria said dismissively, her voice dripping with condescension.

Clara didn't pull away. She looked at Victoria, then back at the gown. The fog in her mind was beginning to clear, replaced by a sudden, sharp clarity. "I just want to try on that dress," Clara pleaded softly, her voice barely a whisper.

Victoria let out a mocking laugh, gesturing back toward the glass where several wealthy women inside the boutique were watching and snickering.

"You?! Try on that dress?!" Victoria sneered, her face twisting in amusement. "You couldn't even afford a single thread of this gown. Go back to where you came from."
