A Strange Encounter in the Backyard

The afternoon sun beat down on the dusty yard, glinting off the polished chrome of parked motorcycles. Dean, a rugged biker with a thick brown beard and arms mapped with faded tattoos, was adjusting his carburetor when he heard a soft thud. Turning around, he saw a tiny boy in a miniature leather vest who had just tripped over the uneven grass.

The boy, no older than six, didn't cry. Instead, he scrambled to his feet, clutching a small object tightly in his dirty hands. Dean knelt down, his imposing frame softening as he looked at the child. The boy’s eyes were glassy with tears, but there was a fierce determination in his small face.

"Please, sir, buy it," the boy pleaded, holding out a beautifully detailed, hand-carved toy motorcycle.

Dean gently took the toy from the boy's trembling hands. He ran his rough thumbs over the polished wood. The craftsmanship was unmistakable—the precise curves of the engine, the signature mark carved into the undercarriage. It was a style Dean hadn’t seen in over six years. His heart skipped a beat.

"Who made this, kiddo?" Dean asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"My dad," Cody sobbed, wiping his nose with his sleeve.

Dean looked at him intently, a cold dread pooling in his stomach. The boy had the same striking blue eyes as his late best friend, Wyatt, who had tragically perished in a fiery wreck years ago. But that was impossible.

"What's his name?" Dean pressed, his grip tightening on the wooden toy.

The boy’s face crumpled as a fresh wave of tears spilled down his cheeks. He looked directly into Dean’s eyes, delivering a truth that shattered Dean’s world.

"My mom said you were there when they buried him," Cody cried out. "But she told me the grave was empty!"
