The Secrets of the Past Unraveled

Dean felt as if the ground had vanished beneath his boots. He stood up slowly, the wooden motorcycle still clutched in his hand. Before he could ask another question, the screen door of the nearby farmhouse creaked open. A pale, exhausted woman stepped onto the porch. It was Sarah, Wyatt’s widow.

When Sarah saw Dean holding the toy and looking at Cody, the color completely drained from her face. She rushed down the steps, pulling Cody behind her protective embrace. Dean saw the raw terror in her eyes, and he knew instantly that the boy wasn’t lying.

"Sarah, what is this?" Dean demanded, his voice cracking with emotion. "Wyatt's grave... is it empty? Is he alive?"

Sarah began to tremble, realizing she could no longer hide the truth. She looked around the yard as if expecting someone to be watching them from the shadows. She ushered Dean inside the house, locking the door behind them.

"He had no choice, Dean," Sarah whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Six years ago, Wyatt got caught up with the wrong people to save his family. They threatened to kill me and our unborn baby. The only way out was to make everyone believe he was gone."

Dean stared at her in utter disbelief. He had wept at Wyatt's closed-casket funeral. He had spent years grieving his brother, feeling guilty that he hadn't been there to save him. All this time, it had been a staged tragedy.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Dean growled, his heart breaking. "I would have protected you! I would have protected him!"
"Because the threat was real," Sarah explained, her voice trembling. "But now... things have changed. Wyatt is sick, Dean. He's hiding in a cabin in the woods, and he doesn't have much time left. He carved that toy for Cody so we could sell it for food. He wanted you to find us."
