Previously: During his daughter's rainy funeral, Richard is stopped by an eleven-year-old boy who claims the girl is still alive—and that Richard's wife is behind it all.

A Father's Miracle

The cemetery workers hesitated, but the fierce resolve in Richard’s eyes left no room for argument. With trembling hands, Richard bypassed them and unlatched the heavy brass locks of the white casket. Sarah screamed, turning to flee toward the parking lot, but two of Richard’s closest friends blocked her path, their faces grim.

Richard lifted the lid. Maya lay there, dressed in a beautiful white dress, her skin pale and cold. Tears blinded Richard as he reached in and gently touched her cheek. He pressed his fingers against her neck, praying, begging whatever forces governed the universe for a miracle. For ten agonizing seconds, there was only the sound of his own breathing. Then, beneath his fingertips, he felt it—a weak, agonizingly slow, but unmistakable thump.

"She's alive!"
Richard roared, his voice echoing across the graveyard.
"Call an ambulance! Right now!"

The funeral erupted into chaos. Paramedics, who had been stationed nearby for the funeral's elderly guests, rushed to the scene. Within minutes, they had Maya hooked to oxygen and an IV. At the hospital, the toxicology report confirmed Leo's story: Maya had been poisoned with a rare, concentrated neurotoxin that slowed her vital signs to a near-unmeasurable level, mimicking death perfectly.

Sarah was arrested at the scene. Investigations later revealed she had planned to eliminate Maya to inherit a massive five-million-dollar trust fund left to the young girl by her late biological mother. Sarah had assumed the quick burial would hide her crime forever.

Three days later, Maya opened her eyes in her hospital bed, her first sight being her father and Leo holding her hands. Richard looked at the young boy who had dared to speak up when everyone else had given up. Sometimes, the loudest truth comes from the smallest voice, and a father’s love will stop at nothing to hear it.
