The Desperate Journey Through the Flood

The rain fell in relentless sheets, turning the gritty streets of the American suburb into a rushing, muddy river. Vintage station wagons and abandoned sedans sat half-submerged along the curbs, their headlights dark. The world had gone cold and grey, but twelve-year-old Toby couldn't afford to stop. His hands, raw and frozen, gripped the rusted metal handle of a grocery shopping cart. With every ounce of his small frame, he pushed against the swirling, knee-deep current.

Inside the plastic-lined cart sat his twenty-six-year-old sister, Sarah. Her clothes were soaked through, her light brown hair plastered to her pale face. She gasped, her head tilting back against the cold rain as another contraction ripped through her body. She clutched her heavily pregnant belly, her knuckles white.

"Ugh... ah... ugh!" she groaned, the sound raw and breathless against the howling wind.

Toby blinked away the stinging rainwater, his dark grey hooded poncho doing little to shield him from the bitter chill. He slipped on a submerged pothole, splashing cold water high into the air, but he caught himself. He couldn't fall. If he fell, Sarah had no one. Their stepfather had locked them out of the house hours ago when the storm began, refusing to believe Sarah was in actual labor and calling her a burden. Now, with the phone lines down and the roads completely flooded, no ambulance could reach them.

"Just hold on, Sarah!" Toby yelled over the thunder, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and fierce determination. "I'm going to get you to the clinic. I promise!" But as he looked down the endless, flooded avenue, the clinic seemed miles away, and the water was only rising.
