A Boy Pushes His Laboring Sister Through a Flood After Being Abandoned
Previously: When a devastating storm floods the city, twelve-year-old Toby must push his pregnant sister Sarah through the rising waters in a shopping cart, desperate to find someone who will help them.
Turned Away Into the Dark
By the time Toby pushed the heavy cart to the edge of the medical district, his legs were trembling with exhaustion. His chest burned with every breath. But when they finally reached the local clinic, Tobyβs heart shattered. The building was dark, its glass doors sandbagged and locked shut. A hand-written sign taped to the inside read: EVACUATED DUE TO FLOODING.
Sarah let out a piercing scream, her body arching in agony. The contractions were coming faster now, barely two minutes apart. Toby knew they didn't have time to reach the city hospital. Desperate, he looked across the street toward the historic district, where grand, historic estates sat on higher ground, their lights flickering warmly.
Using the last of his strength, Toby steered the squeaking shopping cart up a steep, flooded driveway toward a massive stone mansion. He hammered his fists against the heavy oak door. "Please! Help us! My sister is having a baby!" he screamed.
The door creaked open, revealing a stern, grey-haired man wrapped in a woolen coat. He looked at the shivering boy and the groaning woman in the shopping cart with cold, detached eyes.
"This isn't a shelter, kid," the man said curtly. "Go to the high school down the road. I don't want any trouble here."
Before Toby could beg, the man began to close the door. Sarah let out another breathless gasp, slipping forward in the cart. "Please, sir!" Toby cried out, tears finally mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "She's going to lose the baby! Our mother died giving birth to me... please don't let Sarah die too!"
The elderly man froze, his hand trembling on the doorknob as Toby's desperate words seemed to strike a deep, hidden chord within him.
