Claire walked quickly, her dark gray wool coat pulled tight against the biting autumn wind. The wet asphalt of the city streets reflected the neon signs above like a shattered mirror. It was late, and she wanted nothing more than to get home to her quiet apartment. Suddenly, a small hand gripped her sleeve.

Startled, Claire pulled back, her heart leaping into her throat.

"Hey, don't touch me!"
she gasped, spinning around.

Standing before her was a young boy, no older than seven. His face was smudged with dirt, his oversized denim jacket damp from the mist. Tears streamed down his cheeks, leaving clean tracks through the grime. In his trembling hands, he held a small, glittering object.

"Excuse me, but you have the same pin,"
he whimpered, his voice cracking with desperation.

Claire stared down, her annoyance instantly evaporating into cold shock. Nestled in his dirty palms was a gold leaf pin, intricately carved, cradling a large, brilliant blue gemstone. It was a flawless sapphire, catching the dim streetlights.

"What are you talking about?"
Claire whispered, her voice barely audible. She reached up instinctively to touch her own collar, where her mother’s heirloom pin usually rested, though tonight she had left it safe at home.

"My mom has the same pin, here,"
the boy cried, holding the jewelry closer to her.

Claire’s breath hitched. There were only two such pins in existence, custom-made by her grandfather. One belonged to Claire. The other had belonged to her older sister, Elena, who had vanished without a trace seven years ago. Claire looked at the boy, a tear finally escaping her eye and rolling down her cold cheek.
