My Brother Tried to Open Our Father's Casket, Uncovering a Terrifying Family Secret
Previously: When Leo returned home for his father's sudden wake, his sister Maria refused to let him open the casket. She claimed a contagious disease was the cause, but the truth was far more sinister.
The Scratching in the Dark
Leo froze. He stared at the polished mahogany, his breath catching in his throat. For a second, he thought his grief was playing tricks on him. But then it came againβa distinct, rhythmic scraping sound, followed by a dull, desperate thud from deep within the coffin. He looked up at Maria, whose face had drained of what little color it had left.
"Did you hear that?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling. "Maria, there's something inside."
"It's just the wood settling, Leo! Or the cooling system," Maria lied frantically, her voice rising to a panicked pitch. She grabbed his arm, trying to pull him toward the door. "We have to leave the room. The air might be contaminated. Please, Leo, protect yourself!"
But Leo wasn't listening anymore. The frantic nature of her grip, the absurdity of a sudden contagious illness, and the unmistakable sound of human struggle from inside the casket painted a horrifying picture. With a burst of adrenaline, Leo shoved his sister away. She stumbled backward, crashing into a floral arrangement as Leo reached for the heavy brass latches of the casket.
"Leo, stop! You don't know what he did!" Maria screamed.
Ignoring her cries, Leo threw the latches open and hoisted the heavy lid. The dim light of the living room spilled into the satin interior, revealing the terrifying reality. Arthur lay there, his face pale and slick with sweat, his eyes bulging with terror. The silver duct tape covered his mouth, and his hands were bound tightly at his waist.
Leo gasped, stumbling backward in sheer disbelief. "Dad? Oh my god, Dad!" He lunged forward to rip the tape off, but Maria threw herself between them, her eyes blazing with a mixture of rage and sorrow.
"Don't touch him, Leo!" she cried, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "He doesn't deserve your tears. He killed our mother!"
