Previously: When Leo returned home for his father's sudden wake, his sister Maria refused to let him open the casket. She claimed a contagious disease was the cause, but the truth was far more sinister.

A Bitter Justice

The accusation hung heavily in the cold air. Leo stared at his sister, his hands hovering over their bound father. "What are you talking about? Mother died of a heart attack!" he shouted, his voice cracking with agony.

"That's what he wanted us to believe," Maria spat, pointing a trembling finger at the man in the casket. "I found her real medical records hidden in his safe last week, Leo. Along with the arsenic he'd been slipping into her tea for months. He poisoned her to collect her multi-million dollar life insurance policy. He was planning to flee the country tomorrow!"

Leo slowly turned his gaze to Arthur. The older man's eyes darted wildly. Desperate to defend himself, Arthur thrashed, making muffled, pleading noises. Shaking, Leo reached down and ripped the duct tape from his father's mouth.

"Tell me she's lying, Dad," Leo begged. "Tell me it's not true."

But free of the tape, Arthur didn't offer words of comfort. Instead, his voice came out in a harsh, venomous hiss directed at Maria. "You stupid girl! You think you can trap me here? You're just like your weak mother. She deserved to die, and so do you if you try to take what is mine!"

The confession was naked, brutal, and undeniable. The mask of the loving father had slipped completely, revealing the monster underneath. Leo stepped back, his heart shattering into a thousand pieces. The grief he had felt just moments ago transformed into a cold, hollow disgust. He looked at Maria, whose eyes were filled with a tragic, weary vindification.

Without a word, Leo pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed the police. Arthur began to scream curses from the casket, but his threats fell on deaf ears. As the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban neighborhood, Maria and Leo stood side by side in the dim light, finally united in the painful truth.

Sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are not the ones we lose, but the ones we choose to keep close to our hearts.
