The Cheap Locket a Desperate Girl Sold Me Contained My Missing Daughter's Secret
The Golden Locket
The afternoon rain beat a relentless rhythm against the glass of Richard’s downtown jewelry store. For ten years, the quiet shop had been his sanctuary, a place where he could lose himself in the meticulous work of repairing watches and polishing silver, trying to drown out the silence left by his daughter Chloe’s disappearance. Chloe had vanished from her college campus a decade ago, leaving behind no clues, no notes, and a void in Richard’s heart that nothing could fill.
The bell above the door chimed sharply, shattering his thoughts. A young woman rushed inside, shivering and dripping wet. She wore an oversized grey sweater, her blonde hair plastered to her face, her eyes wide with a frantic, desperate energy. She didn't look like a customer; she looked like someone fleeing a nightmare.
She practically threw herself against the glass display case, her hands trembling violently as she held out a small, tarnished gold locket.
"How much for this necklace?" she asked, her voice breathless and trembling.
Richard took the piece gently. It was cheap, mass-produced gold-plated brass, worth virtually nothing on the market. But looking at the sheer terror in the girl's eyes, Richard felt a wave of pity. He didn't want to turn her away.
"Fifty dollars. No more," Richard said, keeping his voice calm and steady.
The girl nodded rapidly, her chest heaving. "Okay. Deal," she whispered, eager to finalize the transaction.
Richard reached into the cash register and pulled out a fifty-dollar bill. As the girl snatched the money, Richard’s thumb caught the latch of the locket. Out of professional habit, he pried it open. Inside were two tiny, faded photographs. Richard’s breath caught in his throat. Staring back at him was the unmistakable crooked smile and bright green eyes of his missing daughter, Chloe. Beside her photo was another picture of Chloe holding a tiny, sleeping newborn.
Richard’s head snapped up, his face pale as a sheet.
"Wait!" he shouted. But the girl, seeing his shock, panicked. She spun around and bolted for the door.
"That was my daughter!"Richard screamed, vaulting over the counter as the door slammed shut.
