The Cheap Locket a Desperate Girl Sold Me Contained My Missing Daughter's Secret
Previously: When an older jeweler bought a simple gold locket from a panicked young woman for fifty dollars, he never expected the photos inside would lead him back to his long-lost daughter.
The Search in the Rain
Richard burst through the door into the pouring rain, his lungs burning as he scanned the slick, gray streets. He spotted the oversized grey sweater disappearing into a narrow alleyway. Ignoring the ache in his joints, he sprinted after her, his leather shoes splashing violently through the deep puddles.
"Hannah! Please, stop! I just want to help!" he cried out, his voice echoing off the brick walls.
He caught up to her near a stack of wooden pallets at the end of the dead-end alley. He reached out, gently catching her arm. Hannah spun around, sobbing, her hands raised in defense.
"Please, I didn't steal it! She gave it to me! Don't call the police!" she pleaded, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks.
Richard held up the open locket, his hands shaking.
"I don't care about the money or the locket, Hannah. This girl inside—Chloe. She is my daughter. She went missing ten years ago. Please, tell me where she is."
Hannah’s defensive posture melted into shock. She looked at Richard, seeing the raw, paternal agony in his eyes. She swallowed hard and leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper.
"Chloe is alive," Hannah said, her voice trembling. "But she’s in a terrible place. We met in a women's shelter years ago, and we became like sisters. But then he found her."
Hannah explained that Chloe was being kept at an isolated, run-down farmhouse on the outskirts of town by a controlling, dangerous man named Marcus. Marcus was the father of Chloe's child, and he kept them cut off from the world, using threats and intimidation to keep Chloe from ever escaping. Chloe had fallen severely ill, and out of desperation, she had given Hannah her most prized possession—the locket her father had given her as a child—hoping Hannah could sell it to buy medicine and hire a car to get them away.
Richard felt a mixture of burning rage and soaring hope. "We are going to get her," Richard declared, his voice hard as steel. "Right now."
