An Urgent Cry for Help

The clinical fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Hospital cast a cold, sterile glow over the reception lobby. Ten-year-old Lily clutched her stomach, her face twisted in agonizing pain. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as she leaned heavily against the high reception desk. She wore her favorite green t-shirt, now damp with cold sweat.

"Ma'am, my tummy hurts a lot!"

she sobbed, looking up at the woman behind the desk. Brenda, the receptionist, barely glanced up from her computer. Adjusting her wire-rimmed glasses, she smoothed her navy blue blazer and sighed with deep annoyance.

"You wait your turn here, just like everyone else."

Brenda replied, her voice sharp and entirely dismissive. From the end of the hallway, a man in a grey wool overcoat came sprinting toward them. It was Mark, Lily’s father. He had just parked the car after a frantic drive to the emergency room. Seeing his daughter trembling in pain, Mark rushed to her side, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders while staring defiantly at the receptionist. "She needs a doctor immediately," Mark demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of fear and anger. Brenda merely pointed a stern finger toward the waiting area, refusing to cooperate.
