The next two hours were the longest of Mark’s life. He sat in the private waiting room, his head in his hands, praying for his daughter's safety. Dr. Vance had personally taken Lily into the operating theater. Finally, the doors opened, and the older doctor walked out, tired but smiling.

"She’s going to be perfectly fine, Mark. We got the appendix out just in time. Another ten minutes, and it would have ruptured."

A wave of relief washed over Mark, and for the first time in fifteen years, he allowed his father to embrace him. But the warmth of the moment quickly turned into cold fury as Dr. Vance remembered the receptionist's behavior. He led Mark back to the reception desk, where Brenda was sitting, looking increasingly nervous.

"Brenda, pack your things,"

Dr. Vance said, his voice cold as ice.

Brenda gasped, her eyes wide behind her black-rimmed glasses. "But Dr. Vance! I was just following the clinic's policy—"

"Our policy is to save lives, not to turn away dying children,"

Dr. Vance interrupted sternly.

"You showed a complete lack of humanity. You are terminated, effective immediately. And I will make sure the medical board hears about your negligence."

Brenda wept as she gathered her things under the watchful, judgmental eyes of the other patients in the waiting room. She had let her petty authority blind her to basic human decency, and it had cost her her career.

As they watched her leave, Dr. Vance turned to his son, tears in his eyes. He begged for a chance to make up for the lost years and to be a grandfather to Lily. Looking at his sleeping daughter in the recovery room, Mark realized that out of this terrifying ordeal, a broken family had been given a miraculous second chance.
