The bailiff hesitated, looking to Judge Beatrice for instruction. The courtroom was charged with an electric silence as every eye fell upon the small black device in Emily’s hand. Sarah’s face had turned an ashen gray, her confident posture completely deflated. Michael tried to salvage the situation, jumping to his feet.

"Your Honor, this is highly irregular and completely inadmissible! This trial is nearly over!"

he argued desperately.

Judge Beatrice raised a hand, silencing the attorney.

"In my courtroom, justice will not be bypassed by technicalities. Bring the device forward,"

she ordered. A court deputy took the recorder from Emily and brought it to the bench. After a brief consultation, the judge allowed the audio to be played through the courtroom’s speaker system.

A crackle of static filled the air, followed by the weak, strained voice of Richard. "Sarah... why are you doing this to me?" he whispered on the tape, his breath shallow. The courtroom gasped. It was clearly the voice of the deceased patriarch, recorded days before his passing.

Then, Sarah's voice cut through the speakers, cold and completely devoid of the grief she had put on display for the jury. "Because, Richard, you were going to leave everything to Emily. I couldn't let that happen. The digitalis in your tea is slow, but highly effective. And the best part? Everyone will think your sweet little nanny Clara did it. I've already hidden the remaining pills in her bedroom."
