The Doctor's Call
Victor laughed nervously, crossing his arms in a desperate attempt to maintain control. "I don't care who you are, mister," Victor stammered. "This kid is my employee, and he disobeyed a direct order. This is my establishment, and I make the rules here."
Robert didn't even look at Victor. He kept his eyes locked on Wyatt, his voice steady and commanding as he spoke into the phone.
"Michael, I need you to fast-track a full academic scholarship and a paid residency prep position. I just witnessed a young man perform flawless emergency first aid under extreme pressure. He has the instincts of a true surgeon. I want him in our program immediately."
The diner patrons began to whisper in excitement. Victor’s smug expression slowly began to crumble as he realized the caliber of the man standing in his diner. Robert hung up the phone and turned to Wyatt, a warm, respectful smile replacing his panicked expression.
"My name is Dr. Robert Carter," he said, shaking Wyatt's gloved hand. "I am the Chief of Surgery at the university hospital. You just saved my son, Lucas. A soul like yours shouldn't be scrubbing grills. You belong in medicine."
Wyatt was completely stunned. He had always dreamed of going to medical school, but his family's financial situation made it an impossible fantasy. Now, a prominent doctor was offering him a golden ticket to his dream career. But Victor, realizing he was losing his hardest worker and facing public embarrassment, tried to backpedal.
"Now, hold on a minute," Victor stammered, his bald head glistening under the diner lights. "Wyatt, let's not be hasty. You're a valued member of the team. I was just stressed. How about a promotion?"
