Previously: Sabrina thought she’d won with her forged crib log. But Clara had the one thing she never expected — the certified court file that would shatter everything.

The Fall That Unlocked a Hidden Truth

I screamed as the floor tilted. My mother’s hand caught mine, and Gideon lunged for me, but it was too late. We slid down a dark chute, crashing into a cold, concrete basement. Nico wailed in my arms, but I held him tight, shielding him from the impact.

Above us, Sabrina’s voice echoed through the opening. “Enjoy your new home, little family. I’ll be back when the money’s gone.” And then the trapdoor slammed shut.

The DNA Report She Slammed Down Was Fake — But the One in My Hands Was Real

I lay in the darkness, my heart pounding. Gideon was beside me, groaning. My mother was curled up against the wall.

“Is everyone okay?” Gideon’s voice was rough.

“I think so,” I managed. “Nico’s crying, but he’s alive.”

My mother crawled over to me, her hands shaking. “I’m so sorry, Clara. I tried to warn you, but she caught me before I could.”

“It’s not your fault,” I said, even though a part of me was furious. Furious at her for hiding, furious at myself for not seeing the signs.

Gideon was already exploring the room. It was small, windowless, with a single door that was bolted from the outside. A few old boxes, a broken chair, and a single lightbulb that flickered.

“She’s not going to come back,” Gideon said, his voice flat. “She’ll drain my accounts and disappear.”

“No, she won’t,” my mother said suddenly. She reached into her sleeve and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. “I found this in her office before she took me. It’s a receipt. A payment to a private investigator — for digging up dirt on Gideon’s late wife.”

I took the paper, my eyes scanning it. “What does this mean?”

My mother’s voice was barely a whisper. “It means Sabrina knew something about the fire that killed her. Something that could destroy Gideon if it ever came out.”

The Twist That Set Us Free

Gideon’s face went pale. “The fire? The one that killed Emily?”

My mother nodded. “The investigator found evidence that it wasn’t an accident. That someone had tampered with the wiring. And that someone was Sabrina.”

I stared at her. “She killed his wife?”

“She didn’t mean to,” my mother said. “She wanted to scare Emily, to make her leave town so Sabrina could get closer to Gideon. But the fire got out of control.”

Gideon’s hands were shaking. He sat down heavily on the broken chair, his head in his hands. “All this time. I thought it was my fault. I thought I left the stove on.”

I went to him, kneeling in front of him. “It wasn’t your fault. It was her. It was always her.”

He looked up at me, and I saw the tears in his eyes. “She’s going to get away with it. We’re trapped down here.”

But I wasn’t giving up. I looked around the room, my eyes landing on a small vent near the ceiling. It was rusted, but it was big enough for a person to squeeze through.

“Help me,” I said, pointing. “We can get out through there.”

Gideon stood up, his strength returning. He climbed onto the chair, pushing at the vent. It gave way with a groan, revealing a narrow shaft.

“You go first,” he said to my mother. “Take Nico.”

I handed Nico to her, and she disappeared into the shaft. Then it was my turn. I squeezed through, the metal scraping my arms, but I didn’t care. I just kept moving.

Finally, I emerged into a dim hallway. My mother was there, holding Nico, who had finally quieted. A door at the end led outside.

We burst into the night air, gasping. The stars were out, and the city lights glittered in the distance. I looked back at Gideon as he climbed out, his face streaked with dust and sweat.

“We need to call the police,” I said. “And we need to find that drive.”

Gideon pulled out his phone. “Already on it.”

Within an hour, the warehouse was swarming with officers. They found Sabrina at her penthouse, packing a suitcase. The USB drive was in her safe, along with the original forged documents.

She was arrested for murder, attempted kidnapping, and fraud. The trial was short. The evidence was overwhelming.

Standing in the courtroom, watching her being led away in handcuffs, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. Nico cooed in my arms, and Gideon’s hand found mine.

“We’re free,” I whispered.

He kissed my forehead. “We’re family.”

And in that moment, I knew that no matter what happened next, we would face it together. Because the truth had set us free, and love had shown us the way.
