A Father Finds His Frozen Daughter Locked Outside While His Ex-Wife Entertains a Guest

A Father's Worst Nightmare

The winter air bit through Zachary’s heavy jacket as he stepped out of his truck. He had arrived thirty minutes early to pick up his five-year-old daughter, Lily, for his weekend custody. The driveway of his ex-wife Nicole's house was slick with fresh snow, and the streetlights cast a cold, eerie glow over the yard. Zachary expected to knock on the door and find Lily ready with her small pink backpack. Instead, as he approached the porch, a sound made his blood run cold. It was a faint, trembling whimper.

Zachary rushed up the steps. Under the harsh glare of the exterior bulb, he saw her. Lily was huddled in a ball on the frozen welcome mat, wearing nothing but her thin pink unicorn pajamas. Her lips were blue, her tiny hands raw and red from the biting frost, and tears had frozen onto her cheeks. She was shivering so violently she could barely speak.

"Daddy..." she whispered, her voice cracking.

With a roar of panic and fury, Zachary scooped her into his arms, wrapping his thick, fleece-lined jacket around her tiny frame. He didn't bother knocking. He kicked the front door open, stepping into the warm entryway. The contrast between the freezing outdoor air and the heated house made his anger boil over.

As he stood in the foyer rubbing Lily's hands, he heard hurried footsteps. Looking up at the staircase, he saw Nicole wrapping a charcoal grey bathrobe tightly around herself. Right behind her was Jared, a shirtless, bald man with a prominent wolf tattoo sprawling across his shoulder. They both stared down at Zachary in utter shock, their faces turning pale.

"Did you guys just leave her out there? In the snow? She's five! Five! Look at her! If she freezes, that's on you!"

Zachary’s voice shook the walls of the house. Nicole stammered, looking from Zachary to the shivering child in his arms, unable to find her words.
