Previously: When Zachary arrived early to pick up his five-year-old daughter, he never expected to find her freezing on the porch while his ex-wife was distracted inside.

The Bitter Truth Unravels

Nicole finally found her voice, stepping down the stairs while nervously tying her robe. "Zachary, wait, it’s not what it looks like! She was supposed to be in bed. We—we didn't know she was outside!" she cried, her voice trembling. Jared took a step forward, his chest puffed out defensively. "Hey man, don't come into this house yelling at her. It was an accident."

Zachary glared at Jared, his eyes burning with an intensity that made the larger man take a half-step back. "Shut your mouth, Jared," Zachary growled. "You don't say a single word to me while my daughter is freezing because of your negligence."

Zachary carried Lily to the living room couch, wrapping her in a thick throw blanket he grabbed from the armchair. He gently rubbed her arms and legs, trying to bring the warmth back to her shivering body. "Lily, sweetie, what happened? Why were you outside?" he asked softly, his voice cracking with emotion.

Between tiny, shuddering sobs, Lily explained. She had woken up thirsty and went downstairs to get a glass of water. She heard her puppy barking outside on the back deck and went to check on him. The heavy back door had swung shut behind her, locking automatically. Terrified and freezing, she had walked around the side of the house to the front porch, hoping her mother would hear her knocking. But the front door was locked too, and her cries had gone unanswered.

Zachary looked up at Nicole, his expression hardening. "A puppy? You got her a puppy and left it outside in a blizzard? And where were you? Why didn't you hear her screaming?"

Before Nicole could answer, Zachary walked toward the kitchen. He could hear the faint, thumping bass of music still playing from the master bedroom upstairs. On the kitchen counter sat three empty wine bottles and a half-empty bottle of whiskey. They hadn't just been distracted; they had been completely oblivious, drowning out the world while a five-year-old child fought for survival just yards away.
