The Deception Begins

The grand dining hall of the Pendelton estate was a testament to old money and tradition. Walnut panels lined the walls, reflecting the warm, flickering glow of candlelight and the opulent sparkle of a crystal chandelier. It was here, amidst this opulence, that Arthur Pendelton, patriarch and titan of industry, lay motionless on a priceless Persian rug. His silver beard was stark against the charcoal of his tuxedo, his body still. An overturned chair nearby hinted at a struggle, or perhaps just a clumsy fall. But the real drama was unfolding with his fiancée, Monique. Dressed in a slinky emerald gown, dripping with diamonds, she knelt not by Arthur's chest to check for a pulse, but directly over his vest, her manicured fingers fumbling for a small, gold key chain peeking from his pocket.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors burst open. Lucas, Arthur's estranged son, stood silhouetted against the light, a simple navy sweater doing little to hide the tension in his frame. In his hands, he clutched a cake box, a stark symbol of the birthday he was clearly late for. He dropped the box with a thud onto a sideboard as his eyes landed on his father. Rushing to Arthur's side, he didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees, his brow furrowed with concern, and felt for a pulse. Then, he looked up at Monique, his voice a mixture of anguish and fury. "Monique, why aren't you doing CPR? Call an ambulance right now, my dad needs help!"

Monique, however, remained eerily calm, the gold key now clutched protectively behind her back. She offered no words, no comfort, just a silent, deliberate step backward, her gaze shifting towards a large, ornate portrait on the wall. Unseen by Lucas, Arthur's eyes, which had appeared lifeless moments before, snapped open. With a strength that belied his supposed condition, he rose effortlessly, his hand gripping Monique's wrist with surprising force. The gold key fell from her grasp. "Save the paramedics for someone who actually had a heart attack, Lucas," Arthur's voice boomed, resonant and steady, cutting through the tension. "I just wanted to see who would check my pulse and who would check my pockets." Monique gasped silently, her face a mask of terror, while Lucas stared, his expression a mixture of shock and dawning relief.
