Previously: A dying patriarch stages his own demise to catch his fiancée red-handed stealing his fortune, only to discover his estranged son's unexpected loyalty might be the true inheritance.

The Lawyer's Revelation

Arthur Pendelton, having revealed his ruse, pressed a small, brass remote control nestled in his palm. The velvet curtain behind the portrait slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a massive 85-inch wall screen. On it, a live feed showed Arthur's senior estate attorney, Mr. Vance, looking composed. He held a thick document, the very embodiment of Arthur's final wishes. Arthur's voice, now devoid of any pretense of weakness, was cold and commanding. "Mr. Vance," he stated, his eyes fixed on Monique, "just recorded your entire confession for the probate court. Those bearer bonds you were so eager to get your hands on, Monique? They are now 100 percent in Lucas's name." The words landed like a physical blow. Monique's knees buckled; the carefully constructed facade crumbled into dust. The gold key, a symbol of her avarice, slipped from her trembling fingers and clattered onto the marble floor.

Lucas stood frozen, the relief of seeing his father alive momentarily overshadowed by the sheer audacity of the situation. He looked from his father to Monique, whose face had drained of all color, her eyes wide with a terror that went beyond mere discovery. It was the terror of absolute ruin. Arthur, sensing the shift in the room, turned his attention fully to his son. The playacting was over, but the true test, he realized, was just beginning. Had Lucas's concern been genuine, or was it a performance as elaborate as his own?

"You were quick to judge, son," Arthur said, his voice softer now, but still carrying an edge. "But your first instinct was to help. Hers was to steal. That tells me everything I need to know."

Monique, finding a sliver of her composure, attempted a desperate plea. "Arthur, darling, it's all a misunderstanding! I was so worried, I just wanted to secure your assets... for us!" Arthur simply raised a dismissive hand, cutting her off. "Save your breath, Monique. The game is over. You played for everything, and you lost." He gestured towards the grand double doors with a finality that brooked no argument. "Lucas brought me a birthday cake and worried about my pulse. You brought greed and tried to rob me blind. You are no longer welcome in this house. Leave. Now." Monique, defeated and exposed, turned and fled the dining hall, her emerald gown a fleeting flash of shame against the dark wood.
