Locked Out in the Cold

The rain fell in relentless sheets, drumming a deafening rhythm against the pavement as Justin pulled his truck into the driveway. It was supposed to be a routine business trip, but a canceled flight had brought him home early. The house was mostly dark, save for a single flickering light on the back patio. As he stepped out of his truck, a sound pierced through the howling wind—a high-pitched, desperate sob that made his heart stop.

Justin sprinted toward the backyard. Through the torrential downpour, he saw a small figure huddled against the glass. It was his five-year-old son, Connor, wearing his favorite Spider-Man costume, soaked to the bone and shivering violently. The little boy was banging his tiny, blue-tinged fists against the locked sliding door, crying out,

"Daddy! Daddy! Please let me in!"

Rage and terror surged through Justin’s veins. He rushed onto the patio, shedding his dark brown leather bomber jacket and wrapping it tightly around the freezing child. Connor clung to him like a lifeline, his small body shaking with uncontrollable tremors. Justin tried the handle. It was locked tight. Furious, he shielded Connor with his body and threw his shoulder against the glass door, forcing the lock to snap open with a loud crack.

Inside, the house was eerily quiet. Justin didn't waste a second. Carrying his dripping, crying son, he raced up the wooden staircase, his boots leaving wet, heavy tracks. He needed answers, and he needed them now. He reached the master bedroom and kicked the door open with a resounding bang.

The sight inside shattered his world. His wife, Stephanie, was in bed, scrambling to pull up the sheets, while another man—a man Justin recognized as their wealthy neighbor, Marcus—tried to hide. Justin’s voice shook with an intense, dangerous anger as he roared,

"You locked him out!"
Stephanie stared back in stunned, guilty silence.
