A Web of Deceit

For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound in the room was Connor’s soft whimpering against Justin’s chest. Stephanie’s face drained of color, her eyes darting between her husband and the shivering child. Marcus, sensing the imminent danger, gathered his clothes in a panicked rush and slipped out of the room, Justin not even deigning to look at him. His focus was entirely on the woman he had promised to love forever.

"Justin, please, it’s not what it looks like,"

Stephanie stammered, her voice trembling as she clutched the duvet.

"We were just... I didn't know Connor was outside! He must have slipped out!"

"He was wearing his pajamas under that costume, Stephanie!"

Justin yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "He is freezing! The door was locked from the inside. You locked him out so you wouldn't be disturbed!"

Connor whimpered, burying his face deeper into Justin's leather jacket. Justin realized his priority had to be his son. He carried Connor to his own bedroom, immediately stripped him of the wet clothes, wrapped him in warm blankets, and held him close until the shivering stopped. As Connor finally drifted into a troubled sleep, Justin went to find Stephanie.

She was waiting in the kitchen, trying to put on a face of remorse, but Justin saw right through it. When he demanded the truth, Stephanie broke down, admitting she had been seeing Marcus for months. But the ultimate betrayal was yet to come. She coldly admitted that she had grown tired of the 'burden' of motherhood. "I needed time for myself," she whispered. Justin realized then that the woman he loved was gone, replaced by a stranger who had put their child's life in danger for a fleeting moment of pleasure.
