Sophia lay on the granite floor, clutching her bruised jaw. The elegant facade of the high-society woman William thought he loved had completely shattered, replaced by the bitter reality of a desperate predator. She spat a trace of blood onto the floor, looking up at William with venomous eyes. There was no remorse in her gaze, only a cold, calculating anger.

"You think you're a hero, William?" Sophia sneered, slowly pushing herself up. "Your precious grandmother is a liar. She’s been planning to cut you out of the family trust since the day we got engaged. I was only trying to get what belongs to us!"

Eleanor gasped, leaning heavily against the base of the staircase as William helped her sit up. "That is a lie," Eleanor whispered, her voice weak but steady. "She didn't want to protect you, William. She came here demanding the deed to the estate. She has massive gambling debts, and her creditors are coming for her."

William looked from his grandmother to his fiancée, the pieces of a terrible puzzle finally falling into place. For months, Sophia had been eager to rush their wedding, constantly asking about the family's assets. Sophia laughed hysterically, smoothing down her torn emerald gown.

"It doesn't matter what she says, William. We signed the prenuptial agreement yesterday, and under state law, as your wife, I am entitled to half of your personal estate if we separate. You can't touch me."

William felt a cold smile touch his lips despite the pain in his chest. He looked at the woman he had almost married and felt nothing but disgust.

"There's just one problem, Sophia," William said quietly. "I found the bank statements you tried to hide last night. I knew something was wrong. So, when we went to the courthouse, I never actually filed our marriage certificate. We aren't married. You have nothing."
