A Sudden Turn of Events
Leo stood frozen in the pouring rain, the weight of Thomas’s words crashing down on him. He had no job, no reference, and no way to help his mother pay the upcoming rent. Yet, looking down at the shivering man beside him, he knew he couldn’t just walk away. Helping the stranger to his feet, Leo guided him toward a small, covered bus shelter just twenty yards down the street, shielding them both from the worst of the storm.
Through the glass windows of the Midnight Harbor Cafe, Leo could see Thomas watching them, a smug, self-satisfied smirk on his face. Thomas had already locked the front door, turning the "Open" sign to "Closed" even though there were still twenty minutes left before their official closing time. He had made his choice, and he clearly felt no remorse for casting a teenager out into the freezing night.
Under the flickering light of the bus shelter, Leo handed the man a dry napkin he had kept in his pocket. "Are you going to be okay, sir? Do you have family nearby?"
The man took a deep breath, his shivering starting to subside. The weak, helpless demeanor he had shown earlier seemed to vanish, replaced by a calm, commanding presence. "I will be fine, young man. Thanks to you. My name is Marcus."
"I'm Leo," the teenager replied softly. "I just... I couldn't leave you out there. Even if it cost me my job. My mom always taught me that people are more important than money."
Marcus smiled, a look of profound respect in his eyes. "Your mother raised an exceptional son, Leo. What did that manager say to you?"
"He fired me," Leo said, looking down at his wet sneakers. "I needed this job to help pay our rent. I don't know what we're going to do now."
