The Foreman's Fury

The biting winter wind whipped around St. Jude's Cathedral, stinging my face with icy sleet. It was dusk, and the gothic limestone steps were slick with a treacherous sheen. The air crackled with the cold, punctuated by the hiss of sleet against unseen vents and the distant, mournful cry of industrial steam whistles. I pulled the oversized, frayed navy twill coveralls tighter, the rough fabric a stark contrast to the bespoke suit I'd worn just hours before. My name is Arthur, and my mission was simple: infiltrate the factory floor of Vance Industries, expose the rot from within. Armand Dubois, the foreman, was exactly what the intel described: burly, callous, with a face like weathered leather and frostbitten red cheeks. He radiated menace, a predator hunched against the cold, dressed in a grease-stiffened canvas jacket. He saw me as nothing more than trainee scum, easily intimidated. As I braced myself against the icy limestone balustrade, Armand shoved me, hard. I stumbled back, the unforgiving stone biting into my spine with a dull, wet impact. "You're replaceable garbage, trainee!" His voice was a guttural growl, laced with a vitriolic malice that chilled me more than the sleet. "Complain about our safety record again and I'll drop twenty tons of scrap iron on your head!" I didn't flinch. My jaw clenched, my eyes, though currently soot-smudged, locked onto his with chilling composure. I absorbed the jarring shove, the melted snow dripping steadily from my dark hair. I'd dealt with worse. Much worse. Armand, mistaking my silence for fear, wound back a heavy, grease-caked leather work glove, preparing to deliver a vicious backhand strike. But his eyes held a flicker of surprise as my bare right hand shot upward with blinding reflex, catching his wrist mid-air. An audible, bone-jarring crack echoed through the frigid air, followed by a sharp whoosh of displaced freezing air. "Let go of me, you worthless stray, or I’ll snap your neck right here on these steps!" Armand snarled, his face contorted with rage. But his grip faltered as my fingers, far stronger than they appeared, tightened like an unyielding hydraulic vise. His knees buckled under the excruciating pressure, the thick veins bulging across my soot-covered forearm a testament to my strength. I was no stray; I was the owner of this entire operation, disguised to uncover the truth.
