Justice on the Steps

I twisted Armand's pinned arm downward, applying just enough pressure to send him crashing completely onto both knees in the freezing snow-dusted slush. The impact was jarring, a final indignity. Just as he hit the ground, the wail of sirens grew deafeningly loud. Two black armored executive sedans, federal marshals lights strobing ominously, screeched to a halt along the cathedral curb. Armand looked up, his pupils dilated in suffocating dread, tears of absolute, ruined terror welling along his lower eyelids and spilling over his ash-smeared cheeks. His chin quivered uncontrollably beneath the towering gothic spires. He finally recognized me, not as the new trainee, but as the CEO he had so carelessly threatened. "You're not fired, Armand," I said, my voice devoid of emotion, carrying a devastating finality. "You're facing twenty years in federal prison for manslaughter, starting tonight." The charges were undeniable, backed by the seventy-four falsified reports and the evidence of negligence that had led to multiple deaths. His life, built on a foundation of cruelty and deceit, had crumbled in a matter of minutes on these cold, unforgiving steps. He had underestimated the new hire, assuming weakness where there was calculated strength. He had threatened a man who held his entire future in his hands. As the federal marshals approached, Armand Dubois was left with nothing but the chilling realization of his own catastrophic failure. The price of his crimes was steep, and his sentence had just begun. Justice, cold and unforgiving as the winter night, had arrived.
