The winter wind bit through Emily’s frayed green knit cardigan, leaving her shivering violently on the cold, damp public bench. Her bare feet, red from the slushy city sidewalk, throbbed with a dull ache. She pressed her knees to her chest, trying to preserve whatever little body heat she had left. To the bustling city, she was invisible—just another forgotten soul blending into the gloomy grey landscape. But to one little girl, she was the only person who mattered.

A soft pair of boots crunched on the slush nearby. Emily looked up to see a young girl wearing a bright blue winter coat with a fleece hood. A few paces behind her stood a man with light stubble, watching protectively but allowing the child to take the lead.

The little girl stopped right in front of Emily, her eyes wide and filled with pure, untainted empathy.

"Are you cold?"

the girl asked, her sweet voice cutting through the rumbling city traffic.

Emily forced a weak, reassuring smile, wrapping her thin cardigan tighter around her shoulders.

"A little, but I'm fine,"

Emily replied softly, not wanting to worry the child.

Without a word, the little girl reached into her pockets and produced a warm brown paper bag. She stepped closer and gently placed it into Emily's frozen, trembling hands.

"This is for you. Daddy bought them for me, but you look hungry,"

the girl said with a warm smile.

The scent of fresh, warm pastries drifted from the bag, instantly bringing tears to Emily's eyes. She swallowed the lump in her throat, clutching the bag like it was the most precious treasure in the world.

"Thank you,"

Emily whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

But the little girl wasn’t done. She took a step closer, looking directly into Emily’s tear-stained eyes, and uttered a sentence that made the world stand completely still.

"You need a home, and I need a mom."

Emily gasped, her heart stopping in her chest. She stared at the child, completely stunned.

"What?"

she whispered, her mind spinning in absolute disbelief.
