The winter wind bit through Emily’s frayed green knit cardigan, leaving her shivering violently on the cold, damp public bench. Her bare feet, red from the slushy city sidewalk, throbbed with a dull ache. She pressed her knees to her chest, trying to preserve whatever little body heat she had left.
