Previously: When shivering, homeless Emily is handed a warm bag of food by a sweet little girl on a slushy sidewalk, she expects simple charity. Instead, the child utters a sentence that changes her life forever.

A Ghost from the Past

Before Emily could process the child's shocking words, the man with the light stubble rushed forward. His face was a mixture of embarrassment and deep, underlying sorrow. He gently placed a hand on the little girl's shoulder, looking apologetically at Emily.

"I am so sorry,"

the man said, his voice deep and gentle.

"Mia, sweetheart, we don't just say things like that to people. I'm James, by the way."

Emily wiped a stray tear from her cheek, shaking her head.

"No, it's... it's okay. She is very sweet. Thank you for the food."

But as Emily spoke, James froze. He stared intensely at her face, his eyes scanning her features—the unique shade of her green eyes, the high cheekbones, and the unmistakable curve of her jawline. The polite smile vanished from his face, replaced by a look of sheer, breathless shock.

"Emily?"

James whispered, his voice trembling.

Emily flinched. She hadn't heard her real name spoken aloud in years. To the shelter and the streets, she was just a ghost.

"How do you know my name?"

she asked, her defensive instincts kicking in.

James slowly reached into his heavy winter coat. His hands shook as he pulled out a worn, leather wallet. From a protective inner pocket, he retrieved a faded, laminated photograph. He stepped closer and held it out to her.

Emily looked down at the photo, and the breath was knocked clean out of her lungs. It was a picture of herself, six years younger, lying in a hospital bed holding a newborn baby girl. She had been crying tears of joy in the photo—before everything was cruelly taken from her.

"My late wife and I adopted Mia six years ago,"

James explained, his eyes shining with tears.

"The agency gave us this photo of her biological mother. They told us she was a young woman whose wealthy family forced her to sign the papers while she was recovering from a tragic accident, leaving her with nothing. I’ve kept this photo in my wallet every single day, hoping that one day, I could find you and thank you."

Emily stared from the photograph to Mia, who was looking up at her with a bright, knowing smile. The pieces of her shattered life suddenly began to rush back together.
