Previously: When a sobbing boy stopped Claire on a dark street, holding a unique gold pin, she never expected it would lead her to the sister she thought she lost forever.

A Forgotten Sister in the Shadows

Claire’s mind raced as she knelt down to match the boy’s height.

"What is your mother's name?"
she whispered, her voice trembling.

"Sarah,"
the boy sobbed, wiping his nose on his sleeve.
"She’s really sick, and she won't wake up. Please, you have to help us."

The name struck Claire like a physical blow. Sarah. It couldn't be a coincidence. Without hesitation, Claire grabbed Sam's hand.

"Take me to her. Right now."

They hurried through the labyrinth of alleys, turning onto a run-down street Claire had never visited. Sam led her down a flight of crumbling concrete stairs into a damp, dimly lit basement apartment. The air inside was heavy and cold. On a makeshift mattress in the corner lay a frail, thin woman, her breathing shallow and labored.

Claire rushed to her side, gently turning her face toward the dim light. She gasped, covering her mouth to stifle a scream. Despite the hollow cheeks and pale skin, the woman was undeniably Sarah. The sister she had cried over, whose grave she had visited every anniversary, was lying right here, clinging to life.

Claire immediately dialed 911, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped her phone. While giving the operator their location, she noticed an old leather bag on the bedside table. Seeking any medical history to help the paramedics, Claire opened it.

Inside, beneath a stack of worn books, was a thick manila envelope addressed to their parents. Claire pulled out the documents. They were medical bills and legal correspondence dating back ten years. As she scanned the pages, a horrifying truth began to unravel.

Sarah hadn't died in a car accident. She had been diagnosed with a rare, expensive neurological disorder. To avoid the financial burden and social stigma, their wealthy, controlling parents had faked Sarah's death, placed her in a private asylum, and lied to Claire. Sarah had eventually escaped, living in hiding to protect her son, Sam, from the family's reach.
