Previously: When Clara the maid was arrested for theft at the majestic Vance estate, the truth seemed clear. But a shocking betrayal was hiding right under their roof.

A Mother's Malice

Arthur rushed into the foyer, his eyes darting from his weeping sons to the deputy, and finally to his mother, Eleanor. "What is the meaning of this, Mother?" he demanded, placing a protective hand on Leo’s shaking shoulder.

Eleanor sighed, adjusting the lapel of her satin suit with practiced elegance. "Arthur, it is a tragedy, but she has abused our trust. My diamond heirloom necklace—the one passed down from your grandmother—was found in her quarters. The deputy was simply doing his job."

"She's lying, Daddy! Clara would never take anything!" Toby cried, burying his face in Arthur's trousers.

Arthur looked at Clara. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with terror, but beneath the fear, he saw the absolute innocence of a woman who had spent years healing his broken family. Since his wife's passing, Clara had been the gentle soul who brought laughter back into these cold, marble halls. He knew her character; she was incapable of such greed.

"Deputy, wait," Arthur commanded, his voice firm. "Do not take her yet. I want to see where this necklace was found."

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of irritation crossing her face. "Arthur, don't be foolish. The police have already searched. Do not embarrass our family name further by defending a common thief."

But Arthur was resolute. He led the deputy, Clara, and his mother up the grand staircase to Clara's modest room. Eleanor pointed triumphantly to the top drawer of the dresser, where the glittering diamond necklace lay exposed. But as Arthur looked at the drawer, he noticed something else—a small, blinking blue light nestled inside the bookshelf opposite the bed. It was a nanny cam he had installed months ago to ensure the boys' safety when they played upstairs. Eleanor had completely forgotten about it.
