The narrow hallway of the modest suburban home felt suffocatingly small. A single framed landscape painting hung crookedly on the wall, vibrating slightly with every harsh shout. On the linoleum floor, Helen, a frail seventy-year-old woman wrapped in a faded brown knit cardigan, cowered and wept. Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her face, trying to shield herself from the venom being spewed by her own son.

Standing over her was Julian. His face was contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated greed, his chest heaving beneath his tight navy t-shirt. He raised a clenched fist, his voice echoing off the tight walls.

"Old burden, go to hell! Die and leave all the money for me!"

Helen could only let out a pained sob, her heart breaking more than her fragile body ever could. Julian believed he was completely alone with his defenseless mother, but the heavy thud of combat boots on the hardwood entryway proved him wrong.

Samantha, Helen’s daughter, stood at the end of the hallway. Having just returned from a grueling military deployment, she was still wearing her dusty camo trousers. Her eyes locked onto the scene, burning with an immediate, protective fury.

"She's your mother, you can't do that!" Samantha roared.

Before Julian could even turn his head fully, Samantha lunged forward. With the precision and power of her military training, she delivered a swift, powerful kick directly to Julian's chest. The impact sent him flying backward, his spine crashing hard against the drywall.

"Ah!" Julian groaned in agony, slumping to the floor.

Ignoring her brother's whimpering, Samantha immediately knelt down, wrapping her strong arms around her weeping mother.

"I will protect you, mom," she whispered, her voice a soothing contrast to the violence of a moment ago.
