An Unexpected Meeting in the Mist

The autumn wind bit through Helen’s charcoal coat as she walked the familiar, damp path of the cemetery. The sky was a heavy, desaturated gray, matching the cold emptiness that had settled in her chest since her son, Andrew, had passed away three months ago. Clutching a bouquet of fresh red roses, she approached his headstone, expecting the usual quiet solitude of her grief. Instead, she found someone else already standing there.

A young woman with light-brown hair, wearing a sand-colored coat, stood cradling a blonde toddler in her arms. The woman’s eyes were red and swollen, tears tracing clean paths down her wind-chapped cheeks. Helen’s breath caught. A mixture of territorial anger and deep confusion flared within her. How dare a stranger intrude on her private sanctuary of sorrow?

"Who are you?" Helen asked, her voice trembling but sharp in the cold air.

The young woman startled, turning to face Helen. She tightened her grip on the little girl, who looked no older than two. Helen stepped closer, her dark leather gloves tightening around the thorny stems of the roses. The silence between them felt heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that made the hairs on Helen's neck stand up.

"Why are you at my son's grave?" Helen demanded, her tone hardening. "Only family belongs here."

The stranger swallowed hard, trying to compose herself. She looked down at the child, who was staring back at Helen with wide, innocent eyes, then back up at Helen with a mixture of fear and determination.

"Andrew told me to come," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He wanted us to meet. This is Lily... and this is his daughter, Maya."
