Previously: Helen thought she knew everything about her late son, Andrew. But a chance encounter with a young mother at his grave reveals a secret he kept until his final breath.

The Truth Behind the Secret

Helen felt the world tilt beneath her feet. The roses slipped from her gloved hands, scattering across the damp grass. She looked from Lily’s tear-stained face to the blonde toddler, whose striking blue eyes—the exact shade of Andrew’s—stared back at her. It was a resemblance Helen couldn't deny, yet her mind screamed in protest. She refused to believe that her son, whom she thought she knew completely, could keep such a massive secret from her.

"That’s impossible," Helen stammered, stepping back. "Andrew didn't have a child. He would have told me. We were close!"

Lily wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice soft but steady. She explained that she and Andrew had met in college, a quiet romance that grew into something beautiful. When Lily got pregnant, they were overjoyed, but Andrew was terrified of how his traditional, overbearing mother would react to an unplanned child. He wanted to establish his career first, to prove he could provide, before introducing his new family to his mother.

"He was going to tell you on Thanksgiving," Lily said, pulling a worn leather journal from her pocket. "But the accident... it took him before he had the chance. I didn't want to intrude on your grief, but Maya deserves to know her father’s mother."

Lily handed the journal to Helen. With trembling fingers, Helen opened it. The pages were filled with Andrew’s neat, familiar handwriting, detailing his love for Lily, his fears, and his hopes for baby Maya. There were even small sketches of the little girl's hands. Helen’s heart shattered as she realized how much of her son's life she had been blind to, all because of her own rigid expectations. The grief of his loss was suddenly replaced by a wave of profound regret.
