The Power Play
In the quiet lobby of the luxury high-rise, Laura finally let out the breath she had been holding. Her hands trembled slightly as she tore open the brown envelope. Inside was a check for two thousand dollars and a hastily drafted agreement relinquishing any claim to the apartment lease. David had always assumed he held all the power because his family’s business backed the lease application. He believed Laura was just a struggling freelance designer who couldn't survive without him.
He was terribly wrong. Laura stared at the check, a cold smile spreading across her face. She pulled out her phone and dialed a familiar number.
"Mr. Harrison? It’s Laura. Is the acquisition of the building’s holding company finalized?"
The elderly lawyer’s voice came through the speaker, warm and reassuring. "Yes, Laura. The wire transfer from your late grandmother's trust cleared an hour ago. You are now the sole owner of the entire residential complex. The building manager has already updated the registry."
Laura thanked him and hung up. She had kept her massive inheritance a secret, wanting to ensure David loved her for who she was, not her wealth. His betrayal tonight had given her all the answers she needed. She didn't need to pack her bags. In fact, she had a much better idea.
She took the elevator back up to the penthouse. Slipping her key into the lock, she opened the door to find David, Sarah, and Marcus clinking glasses of champagne in the living room, celebrating her departure. The laughter died instantly when they saw her walk back in, empty-handed and completely calm.
"Laura? What are you doing back here?" David snapped, setting his glass down. "I thought we made things clear."
