A Playful Challenge Turns Cold

The afternoon sun beat down on the dusty arena of the Blackwood Ranch, where the annual summer rodeo was in full swing. The bleachers were packed with cheering locals, their laughter echoing against the wooden fences. At the center of it all stood Wyatt, a charismatic young cowboy whose charm was as legendary as his riding skills. Holding a silver microphone, he basked in the warmth of the golden-hour light, flashing his trademark grin. On a whim, his eyes locked onto Nora, a quiet young woman standing near the edge of the stage in a simple, faded floral dress.

"Sing, and I'll marry you," Wyatt called out, his voice booming through the speakers.

The crowd erupted into whistles and cheers, nudging Nora forward. She looked down nervously, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson as the weight of hundreds of staring eyes fell upon her. She had never sought the spotlight; she was just a quiet girl who kept to herself, working the stables. But as the teasing chants grew louder, something shifted inside her. Nora stepped up to the microphone, took a deep breath, and closed her eyes.

What came out of her was not a nervous stutter, but a haunting, resonant vocal note. "Hummm," she sang, her voice rich with a sorrow that seemed far too heavy for her young years. The melody was slow, winding through the warm air like a ghost. Instantly, the cheering died down. The rowdy bleachers fell into a stunned, breathless silence.

Wyatt’s playful grin vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, unadulterated shock. His breathing hitched as the familiar, heartbreaking tune washed over him. Nearby, an older cowboy named Jesse suddenly lowered his hat, refusing to meet anyone's gaze. Wyatt stepped closer to Nora, his voice trembling with a sudden, intense urgency.

"Who taught you that song?" he demanded.
