Previously: When Frances fell down the porch steps, her son Charles immediately blamed Nicole. But a hidden camera captured the terrifying truth about who was actually responsible.

The Accusation

Within ten minutes, the quiet neighborhood was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of an ambulance and two police cruisers. Charles stood by the stretcher, putting on a masterful performance of a grieving, protective son. He wiped away fake tears as he spoke to the responding officers, pointing aggressively at Nicole, who was sitting on the curb, weeping and holding an ice pack to her bruised cheek.

"She's been jealous of my mother's estate for years," Charles lied smoothly to the officer. "I walked out and saw her push my mother down those stone steps. She wants her dead so she can claim her half of the inheritance."

The officer walked over to Nicole, his hand resting near his holster. Nicole felt her heart sink. She was Frances’s stepdaughter, and ever since Frances’s health had begun to decline, Charles had been trying to force Nicole out. He wanted to put Frances in a cheap care facility and sell the historic family home for a massive payout. Nicole had stayed to protect her stepmother, but now, it seemed Charles had found the perfect way to eliminate her.

"Ma'am, your brother claims he witnessed you assault your stepmother," the officer said sternly. "Do you have anything to say before we take you in for questioning?"

Nicole looked up, her vision blurry from tears, but her voice was steady. "I didn't push her. And I can prove it."

Charles scoffed from the porch. "She's lying! There are no witnesses! It's her word against mine, and my mother is unconscious!"

But Nicole reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone. She pointed to a small, inconspicuous black ornament hanging in the leaves of the hanging fern beside the front door. It was a motion-activated smart camera she had installed just three days prior, after noticing mysterious bruises on Frances's wrists.
