Clara’s face went pale as she realized her secret was out. The frail, trembling act vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hard sneer. She let go of Thomas's arm and stepped back, her eyes darting around like a trapped animal.

"It's not what it looks like,"

Clara stammered, but the lie fell flat.

Thomas looked at his mother, the woman he had defended, the woman he had struck his own daughter to protect. The realization of his mistake hit him like a physical blow. He had allowed his grief over his late wife to blind him, letting Clara manipulate him and drive a wedge between him and Emily.

"Get off my property, Mother,"

Thomas said, his voice hollow and broken.

"And if you ever come near my daughter or my home again, I will take this footage straight to the police."

Without another word, Clara grabbed her purse from the porch and hurried down the driveway, her limp completely gone.

Thomas turned to Emily. The guilt that washed over him was suffocating. He walked over to her, his eyes filling with tears, and fell to his knees in the grass.

"Emily... oh god, Emily, I am so sorry,"

he choked out, reaching for her hands.

"I was so blind. Can you ever forgive me?"

Emily looked down at her father. Despite the pain and the bruise forming on her cheek, she knelt down and wrapped her arms around him.

"I forgive you, Dad,"

she whispered, weeping into his shoulder.

"I just wanted to save us."

It would take time for the physical and emotional bruises to heal, but the wall of lies that had divided them was finally gone.
