Previously: Richard pretended to be paralyzed to expose his son-in-law's greed. But when Devon lunged at little Zoe, the old man stood up and caught his wrist mid-air — and the judge was watching live.

The Secret She Was Hiding

The handcuffs clicked shut around Devon's wrists, and the sound was final. Richard watched as the officers led his son-in-law out of the ballroom, past the velvet curtains and the crystal chandeliers, past the portraits of Holloways who had come before.

Zoe was still clinging to Richard's side, her small fingers digging into his jacket. He looked down at her, and for the first time in months, he saw something other than fear in her eyes. He saw hope.

"You're not… you're not paralyzed," she whispered.

"No, sweetheart," Richard said, his voice softening. "I'm not."

He knelt down, bringing himself to her eye level. "But I had to pretend. I had to catch him in the act. And I needed you to be brave. You were so brave, Zoe."

She smiled through her tears, and Richard wiped one away with his thumb. "Now, let's go talk to your mother."

But his daughter, Claire, was not in the ballroom. She was in the study, pacing, her phone in her hand, her eyes red from crying. When Richard walked in, she froze.

"Dad?" she said, her voice shaking. "Your legs—"

"They work, Claire," Richard said. "They always have."

Claire's face went pale. "You faked it? All this time? Even the crash?"

"The crash was staged," Richard admitted. "I had to know the truth. About Devon. And about you."

Claire's hand went to her mouth. "What are you talking about?"

Richard pulled out the folder he had been holding — the one with the notarized deeds. But underneath those deeds was another document, one he had hidden even from himself for years.

"Zoe," he said softly, "go wait in the hall."

The girl looked up at him, confused, but she obeyed. When the door clicked shut, Richard turned to his daughter.

"I know who Zoe's real father is," he said.

Claire's face went white. "Dad—"

"Don't lie to me," Richard said. "I had a DNA test done when she was born. You thought I didn't know, but I did. I've known for eleven years."

Claire sank into a chair, her hands trembling. "I was going to tell you. I was going to tell everyone. But Devon—" she choked on his name. "Devon threatened to take her away. He said he'd ruin the family name. He said he'd tell the press that I was a—"

"That you were what?" Richard asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

"That I was sleeping with the help," Claire whispered. "That I got pregnant by a man who worked in our stables. He was the only one who was ever kind to me, Dad. The only one who didn't want my money."

Richard closed his eyes. He had suspected, but hearing it out loud was different. "Where is he now?"

"He died," Claire said, tears streaming down her face. "A car accident, three years ago. He never even knew about Zoe. I never got the chance to tell him."

Richard sat down across from her, his legs feeling suddenly weak — not from any physical ailment, but from the weight of what he had just learned.

"Why did you marry Devon?" he asked.

"Because he was the only one who would take me," Claire said. "After the scandal almost broke, he said he'd protect me. But he only wanted the money. He's been bleeding the company dry for years."

Richard's jaw tightened. "I know. I've been watching."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a memory card. "I have proof of every offshore account, every fake invoice, every time he tried to transfer funds out of the estate. He's going to prison for a very long time."

Claire looked at him with a mixture of gratitude and shame. "And Zoe?"

"She's my granddaughter," Richard said firmly. "She always has been. And she always will be."

He stood up, walking to the door. "But there's one more thing you need to know, Claire. About the night Zoe was born."

Claire's eyes widened. "What?"

"There was a second document in that folder," Richard said. "One that changes everything."
