He Faked Paralysis to Catch His Cheating Son-in-Law Red-Handed
Previously: Richard pretended to be paralyzed to expose his son-in-law's greed. But when Devon lunged at little Zoe, the old man stood up and caught his wrist mid-air — and the judge was watching live.
The Boy in the Photo
Claire followed her father into the ballroom, where the police had finished their work. Devon was in the back of a patrol car, his face pressed against the window, but Claire didn't look at him. She couldn't.
Richard led her to the leather desk, where the folder lay open. He pulled out a single photograph, faded and creased, and handed it to her.

It was a picture of a young man standing next to a horse, his smile wide and unguarded. He had dark hair and kind eyes, and he was looking at the camera like he had just been told a wonderful secret.
Claire's breath caught in her throat. "That's… that's him. That's Daniel."
"I know," Richard said. "I had a man track him down after the accident. He was living in a small town in Oregon. Working as a mechanic. He never knew about Zoe."
Claire's hands were shaking. "Why are you showing me this?"
"Because," Richard said, "I did something I'm not proud of. When I found out about the DNA test, I was angry. I was angry at you, at him, at the whole situation. So I had his phone tapped. I had his mail monitored. And I found out something that changed my mind."
He reached into the folder and pulled out a second photograph. It was a picture of a small boy, maybe six years old, with the same dark hair and kind eyes.
"He has a son," Richard said. "A boy named Ethan. He's also your son, Claire. Daniel had a son from a previous relationship, but when he died, the boy went to live with his grandmother."
Claire stared at the photograph, her mind reeling. "I have another child?"
"Half-brother to Zoe," Richard said. "And he's been living in a foster home for the past two years, because his grandmother died and there was no one to take him in."
Claire's eyes filled with tears. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was a coward," Richard admitted. "I didn't want to face the fact that my own daughter had been living a double life. But now, after what I just saw with Devon, I realize that I've been wrong about so many things."
He took her hands in his. "Zoe is my granddaughter, and I love her. But Ethan is also my family. And I want to bring him home."
Claire broke down, sobbing into her father's chest. "I'm so sorry, Dad. I'm so sorry I kept all of this from you."
"It's okay," Richard said, stroking her hair. "We're going to fix this. Together."
The next morning, Richard made a phone call to a lawyer in Oregon. By the afternoon, arrangements were being made to bring Ethan to New York. Zoe was ecstatic when she found out she had a brother, and she immediately started planning the room they would share.
Two weeks later, Richard walked into the living room to find Zoe sitting on the floor with a boy who looked just like her — same dark hair, same serious eyes. They were building a castle out of blocks, and Ethan was laughing.
Claire was sitting on the couch, watching them, and for the first time in years, she looked at peace.
"Dad," she said softly, "thank you."
Richard sat down beside her, the old man's eyes glistening. "I should have been there for you, Claire. I should have protected you from Devon. But I was too busy protecting the family name."
"You're here now," she said. "That's all that matters."
Richard looked at the two children on the floor, at his daughter's tired smile, and at the grand ballroom that had seen so much pain and so much love.
"I'm done with secrets," he said. "From now on, this family lives in the light."
Zoe looked up, her eyes bright. "Grandpa, can we keep the castle?"
"We can build a bigger one," Richard said. "As big as you want."
And for the first time in years, the Holloway estate felt like a home again.
